GARDA FOR A DAY
Have you ever fancied yourself as a member of the Gardaí? Due to the coronavirus, Glanmire’s local Garda unit have found themselves short staffed during these troubling times. That’s why, after a helpful suggestion from Glanmire local Fergus O’Mahony (72), they have come up with this excellent initiative to cover any absent staff, while also providing an opportunity for regular Glanmire civilians to experience what it’s like “on the beat” for a day.
You will be kitted out in a full, standard issue Garda uniform and accompany a real life Garda on their patrol for an entire shift. While you won’t have the full powers of arrest enjoyed by An Garda Síochána, you will certainly look and feel the part. Your big day will include going on patrol in a squad car, interacting with locals and maybe even handing out fines and penalty points. Should any arrests take place you’ll be right there in the thick of the action, building memories that will last a lifetime.
To sign up, please call 112 or visit the Glanmire Garda station near Grandon’s in Sallybrook.
No prior experience or training is required, although the Gardaí do request that you only apply if you are over 18 years of age and have no more than 4 penalty points on your driving license.
*Volunteers may be paired together in situations of extreme shortage of staff. Shift hours will count towards community service orders where applicable.
